Sacristans

Sacristans

The Sacristan duties include preparing the liturgical items for Mass. This involves the chalice, communion vessels, purificators, pall, hosts, wine and any other necessary items for the Mass. It also involves lighting candles and arranging for lighting, sound and other necessary controls before and after Mass. Sacristans may be involved in helping to coordinate the congregation and/or other ministers.

Helpful Attributes: Devotion to the Mass and understanding of the liturgy and its elements. Plus, a reverent approach to the altar, vessels, etc. and a deep appreciation and faith in the Eucharist and the Mass is essential.

Time Commitment: Typically, sacristans commit to one Mass, one weekend a month on an ongoing basis. Sacristans should arrive 30 minutes before scheduled Mass and may need to assist briefly after Mass as well.

Training Commitment: Training is provided before duties commence.
