St. Louis Abbey

” Therefore we intend to establish a school for the Lord’s service. In drawing up its regulations, we hope to set down nothing harsh, nothing burdensome. The good of all concerned, however, may prompt us to a little strictness in order to amend faults and to safeguard love.”  ~ Rule of Benedict, Prologue

The monastery was established in 1955 on 150 acres of great beauty 15 miles to the west of the city of Saint Louis. At the invitation of the late Joseph Cardinal Ritter, Archbishop of Saint Louis, the abbot and community of Ampleforth Abbey, England, sent three monks to found the monastery and to establish a school. Brothers of the Christian Schools (De La Salle Christian Brothers)

The Christian Brothers are a congregation of lay religious men, founded in 1680 by St. John Baptist de La Salle to serve the educational needs of the poor children of France. Today, aided by thousands of Lasallian partners, the brothers serve in education-related works in over 80 countries of the world. The Brothers came to St. Louis in 1849 and began teaching at the Cathedral Parish School for Boys, next to the “Old Cathedral” downtown. In 1850, Christian Brothers College was founded at 8th and Cerre Streets. In 2003 the fourth campus of Christian Brothers College High School opened in Town & Country. St. John Baptist de La Salle was proclaimed patron saint of teachers in 1950. In the Archdiocese the Christian Brothers also sponsor De La Salle Middle School at St. Matthew’s Parish in North St. Louis and La Salle Retreat Center in Wildwood.
